RSL were apart of the award winning team that succeeded in revolutionising the Public Transport network at Dundee.
Journey Planning kiosks and electronic signage are just a part of the extensive project to entirely revamp public transport information systems and waiting facilities in Dundee. The £9million ‘Bringing Confidence to Public Transport’ and ‘SmartBus’ initiatives, which were funded by the Scottish Executive, helped provide the public with a state of the art transport system of which is safe and pleasurable to use.
‘I have recently seen and been greatly impressed by these enhancements for bus users in the City, as well as the partnership approach which has been adopted by all the key organisations involved’. - Tavish Scott MSP, Minister for Transport
Let’s break down the project, as it developed considerably from the original contract.
The initial contract consisted of;
- 16 journey planning kiosks.
- 13 bus stance LCD signs
- 1 x 8 line sign at Ninewells hospital
- 1 x 11 line sign at Seagate bus station
- 13 Audio systems at bus stances to assist the partially sighted

Additions to the contract were;
- 4 x 20 inch high brightness departure screens at the Bus station
- 2 Architectural structures nicknamed ‘The Wedge’, see below
Each of the wedges contained;
- 2 x 12 line large LCD departure screens,
- A journey planner and
- 2 two static illuminated poster panels for advertising, maps and other public information
The construction of the wedge involved a granite base with a steel structure supporting the signs and journey planner. Architects Nicoll Russell Studios produced the designs.
Dundee City Council contracted JMP Consultants to manage the project whilst Steer Davis Gleave were the main contractors and software providers. RSL were awarded with the hardware and integration area of the project and Travel Information Systems (TIS) provided the transport and journey planning data.
