Bullingdon Prison from the outside RSL bring the popular BBC prison character Fletch (Porridge) back to basics, with his voiceover used as the welcome message, and other messages, on a system designed to provide inmates with necessary information on a wide variety of subjects.

The key issue here was the lack of communication between officers and inmates, especially as a surprisingly high percentage of inmates have little to no understanding of English. RSL produced a set of two sturdy interactive kiosks with multilingual capabilities giving prisoners information in many different languages. One of the aims of the project was to reduce suicides in prisons, linked to inmates not having information on education, careers, health or even whom to speak to in terms of abuse or medicine along with other 'prison specific' information. One unit on the wing proceeded to gain popularity and is recorded at getting over 1000 hits per month.

The famous Ronnie Barker Fletch from Porridge provides the English voiceover The RSL prison software encompasses our multilingual software capabilities with our ability to produce effective and unique hardware results. It was designed in conjunction with the prison service, with all the information populated by the prison service itself; which was then translated and entered into the grid system by RSL.

The easy to navigate layout has the information, pictures and descriptions in the middle and different language options featured at the top of each page. There are 24 minimum topics available, ranging from diet, health, bullying, education etc with specifics being added by the prison themselves on whom is the relevant prison guard to speak to about a subject, like a relevant wing officer for example.

All information was re-worded to comply with literacy level 1, making it accessible to all inmates.

These systems are some of our best in terms of audio, with all the information being provided in audio format (English featuring the classic voice of Ronnie Barker, as the quintessential prison character ‘Fletch’).

The units are sturdy with vandal resistant precautions taken in the form of shock proof fittings and toughened glass. The units were finished in the Bullingdon colours and the logo was graphically printed onto the front.

The units are installed with an RSL Kiosk Minder, to ensure the system is up and running at all times, alerting our engineers if otherwise, whilst also gathering usage statistics.
